? Sowing in Flooded Ponds
Makhana seeds are sown by hand into deep, muddy pond beds in the dead of winter. Farmers wade into waist-deep water in near-freezing temperatures to plant each seed. For six months, the lotus plant grows across the pond surface. Farmers maintain the water levels, remove weeds and protect the plants from pests — entering the water daily. Harvest by Hand, Underwater
In September, the seeds sink to the bottom of the pond. Harvesters dive into the murky water, feeling blindly through thick mud with their bare hands for the seeds — one at a time. A skilled harvester collects only 15–20 kg per day. The labour is entirely manual, passed down through the Mallah community for generations.
