Mithila Makhana — India's Black Diamond Superfood
Makhana (Euryale ferox), also known as Fox Nuts or Lotus Seeds, is one of India's most prized agricultural exports — a puffed aquatic seed harvested from ponds and wetlands in Bihar's Mithila region. Bihar accounts for approximately 85% of India's total Makhana production, with key districts including Madhubani, Darbhanga, Sitamarhi, Saharsa and Purnia serving as primary hubs.
In 2022, Bihar's Makhana received the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag as "Mithila Makhana" — recognising its unique quality, traditional cultivation methods and regional identity. In the Union Budget 2025, the Government of India announced the establishment of a dedicated Makhana Board in Bihar, further boosting production standards and export infrastructure.
India has exported over 25,000 metric tonnes of Makhana annually to nearly 3,000 buyers across 50+ countries. The global Makhana market is growing at a CAGR of 10.3% and is projected to reach USD 123 million by 2033 — driven by rising demand for plant-based superfoods, gluten-free snacks and high-protein natural foods.
🌿 Health Benefits of Makhana
High Protein — Plant-Based Superfood
Makhana contains approximately 9–10g of protein per 100g — significantly higher than most snack alternatives. It provides all essential amino acids, making it an excellent plant-based protein source for vegans, vegetarians and fitness-conscious consumers.
Low Glycemic Index — Diabetic Friendly
Makhana has a naturally low GI, releasing glucose slowly into the bloodstream. This makes it a recommended food for people managing Type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance and blood sugar regulation — safe for daily snacking without sugar spikes.
Rich in Antioxidants
Contains kaempferol, a natural flavonoid antioxidant that fights free radicals, reduces oxidative stress and helps lower the risk of chronic diseases including cancer and heart disease. Also rich in gallic acid and chlorogenic acid.
Anti-Ageing Properties
Makhana contains the enzyme L-isoaspartyl methyltransferase, known for its anti-ageing effect at the cellular level. Regular consumption supports skin health, collagen integrity and slows cellular ageing — widely used in Ayurvedic wellness traditions.
Heart Health — Low Sodium, Low Fat
Naturally low in sodium, saturated fats and cholesterol — Makhana actively supports cardiovascular health. High magnesium content helps regulate blood pressure and heart rhythm, reducing the risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
Gluten-Free & Allergy Safe
100% naturally gluten-free — Makhana is safe for people with celiac disease, wheat intolerance and gluten sensitivity. It is also free of common allergens, making it one of the most universally safe natural snack options available.
Rich in Magnesium, Calcium & Phosphorus
Exceptional mineral content: high calcium supports bone density, magnesium regulates nerve and muscle function, phosphorus supports kidney health, and zinc boosts immune function — making Makhana a truly complete mineral food.
Supports Weight Management
Low in calories (~347 kcal/100g) but high in fibre and protein — Makhana creates sustained satiety, reducing overeating. Its light, crunchy texture makes it an ideal guilt-free snack replacement for chips, popcorn and fried foods.
Kidney & Detox Support
Traditionally used in Ayurveda and Chinese medicine to support kidney function, reduce inflammation and remove toxins. Makhana's natural astringent properties help cleanse the spleen and support the body's natural detoxification processes.
Stress Relief & Mental Wellness
Contains thiamine (B1) which supports neurotransmitter synthesis and cognitive function. Makhana also has adaptogenic properties that help manage cortisol levels — supporting mental calm, better sleep and reduced stress responses.
Before It Reaches Your Table —
The Untold Story of Every Makhana
"A farmer wades chest-deep into a freezing Bihar pond at 4am. He cannot see the bottom. The water is cold enough to numb his hands. His feet dig into thick black mud to find the tiny seeds. He does this for eight hours. Every single day during harvest season. This is how your Makhana is born."
🌱 Sowing in Flooded Ponds
Makhana seeds are sown by hand into deep, muddy pond beds in the dead of winter. Farmers wade into waist-deep water in near-freezing temperatures to plant each seed. The work is done barefoot, in the dark, before sunrise — before the heat makes it unbearable. There are no machines. There never have been.
🪷 Waiting and Tending
For six months, the lotus plant grows across the pond surface. Farmers maintain the water levels, remove weeds and protect the plants from pests — entering the water daily. The giant thorny leaves cut the skin. The mud holds the feet down. Progress is measured one careful step at a time, in silence.
🫶 Harvest by Hand, Underwater
In September, the seeds sink to the bottom of the pond. Harvesters dive into the murky water, feeling blindly through thick mud with their bare hands for the seeds — one at a time. A skilled harvester collects only 15–20 kg per day. The labour is entirely manual, passed down through the Mallah community for generations.
🔥 The Roasting That Takes Skill, Not Speed
Wet seeds must be dried in the sun for weeks, then roasted in cast-iron pans over intense heat. The temperature window is just seconds wide — too cold and the seed won't pop, too hot and it burns. Only a trained hand knows the exact moment. The roaster listens for the sound. Machines have never replicated it.
👁️ Sorted by Eye, Grain by Grain
For premium Hand Picked grades — 5 Suta, 6 Suta and 7 Suta — every single piece is inspected individually by skilled women workers. Broken, discoloured or irregular pieces are removed by hand. A worker grades for 10 hours a day. Her fingers develop calluses. Her eyes become calibrated instruments that no machine can match.
🏘️ The Mallah Community of Bihar
Makhana cultivation has been the livelihood of the Mallah fishing community of Mithila for over 500 years. These families have no other crop. No backup. When Makhana prices fall, they cannot feed their children. When you choose premium, GI-tagged Makhana, you are not just buying a superfood — you are sustaining a way of life that exists nowhere else on Earth.
From a cold Bihar pond at 4am to your packaging — Makhana travels through at least 14 pairs of human hands before it reaches you. No crop demands more patience, more skill, or more sacrifice from its farmers. When a customer holds a pack of premium 6 Suta Makhana, they are holding months of invisible labour by people who never get credit for it.
At SDEY Global Trade, we source directly from trusted Bihar farmer networks — ensuring fair prices reach the families who deserve them most, while delivering the finest quality Makhana to buyers worldwide.
